Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Judging by last week and yesterday, people are kicking their holiday crafting into high gear. Now is the time to get serious about those special gifts. Need inspiration? Come on into the shop. Ideas abound! There are so many lovely beads to choose from and all the findings you’ll need to bring it all together. I’ve restocked the seed beads and there are some new colors, too. Components for all of your favorite holiday earrings are here loose or in kits. All of the newest magazines are here full of lovely new patterns to jumpstart your inspiration. If you don’t have time to make something special, all of the hand crafted pieces here in the shop are 30% OFF, now through Christmas! SILVER BELLS ORNAMENT
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8, 6:00-8:00 P.M.

This is the one you’ve all been waiting for. The new ornament for this year. It’s an old design with a new life that a friend, Karen Wight, brought to me. It’s a sweet, easy little bell to glisten on your tree. They're so easy to make you still have plenty of time to make a whole choir of bells to hang, or to give as gifts. Components are available in gold, too. (This will also make a great Bridal Shower favor or decoration). So, RING in the holiday season with these lovely silver bells. Skill Level: Beginner

WIREWORKS: WIRE SCULPTING
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 10:30-12:30

The first in the WireWorks series taught by Maine Artist Mig Lemire of Scarborough, this is our version of Wire 101. Learn how to fashion elegant wire sculpture around a flat stone, beach glass or dichroic glass piece. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to create, and how many compliments you'll receive on your craftsmanship. This stunning art form is so much easier than it looks, you'll wonder why you waited so long to take the class. SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER.

"A BERRY HAMMERED HOLIDAY" EARRINGS: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1:00-3:00

These fabulous hammered silver earring are designed by Mig, (but named by me in one of my quirkier moments. The garnet pearls and beads just reminded me of winter berries). If you enjoyed the hammered cuff bracelet and earrings in October, (or even if you've never hammered metal before) you'll have wonderful fun creating these beautiful earrings. You'll learn hammering, texturing and the proper way to hole punch metal as well. Who would guess that such physical techniques could yield such elegant adornments. It's All Happening Here on Water Street!!

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the past year and contemplate the things we are most grateful for. As I sit down on Thursday for a wonderful meal with my family, I’ll be thinking of all of you. Several people have told me lately that they are so glad that this little shop is here. It goes both ways. I am so grateful for all of you, your friendship and your patronage. I am here, and will continue to be here only because of you and your support of this small business. As the year draws to a close, I’ll be thinking and planning 2012’s classes and events. I would love to hear your thoughts, too. What kind of merchandise, classes, or special events would you like to see here at the shop? Let me know. I may not be able to do it all, but I will take it all into consideration. In the meantime, have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

THIS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26^TH, there are all kinds of things happening here on Water Street in downtown Augusta and here in the shop.

First, there are still a couple of seats left for BEADING BASICS with Marie Jacques from 10:30-12:30. If you have been wanting to get started beading, this is the class to do it. You will learn basic stringing, using tools, find out about wires and findings, design and composition, and how to put it all together. It’s easy if you know how and after Saturday, you’ll know how!

The other big happening on the street is the annual “City of Augusta Riverfront Holiday Tree Lighting Tradition”. It’s a day of activities and events all leading up to the Tree Lighting at Waterfront Park and FIREWORKS!! I’ve attached a flyer (above) with a schedule of the events. Calling all Knitters! We need your leftover yarn!

Hi Everyone,

At this time of the year, we tend to think more of those in need and try to find ways to lend a helping hand. For those of you who knit or do crafts with yarn, this will be an easy fit.

Friends at Kennebec Behavioral Health are seeking donations of yarn for a family in need. This family wishes to create knitwear and crafts to sell at local craft fairs, to generate income to purchase essentials to carry them through the coming winter months. They want to do the work themselves, they just need help getting the materials to create sellable items.

If you have left over yarn or yarn from a project you never got around to and have now lost interest in, you can either drop it off here at Beads on the Kennebec, 333 Water Street in downtown Augusta, or, at Kennebec Behavioral Health at 66 Stone Street, Augusta to the attention of Melissa Winchester.

Please bring your donated yarn during working hours starting Monday, November 14^th (Tuesday here at the shop) through Saturday, November 26^th.

The ornament classes have been big hits, as usual. If you missed taking the ‘VICTORIAN CRYSTAL HEIRLOOM ORNAMENT” during Christmas in July, you have another chance at this two part class this week and next week, Thursday, November 10^th and 17^th from 6-8 P.M.. People can't get enough of these gorgeous ornaments. The piece is so beautiful it will take your breath away. Mig is back this Saturday, November 12th, with two of her most popular classes. The CAGED PENDANT and the ARROWS BRACELET are always sought after pieces. Each is intriguing in its own way.
CAGED PENDANT: From 10:30-12:30. For all of you Wired Up Fans of Mig, this technique will thrill you. you will take a cabochon stone (flat backed, domed face) and trap it in a “caged” border. It's a stunning effect and easy to learn with a basic wire wrapping background. Do you have a beautiful cabochon that you found at a gem show? Friends of Cyndy Sexton

Some of you may not be aware that the founder of Beads on the Kennebec was a wonderful woman named Cynthia Sexton. Cyndy was an expert beader and for more than four years loved running this shop and delighted in her customers and their accomplishments. Cyndy reluctantly gave up the shop in order to focus on treatments for breast cancer. Those who knew and loved Cyndy will want to know that she passed away on Wednesday, October 5^th, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. on Monday, October 10th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street in Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, October 11th at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial and committal prayers will follow in the family lot in St. Mary Cemetery, Winthrop Street, Augusta.

Donations may be made in Cyndy’s memory to: Franklin Memorial Hospital-Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, 111 Franklin Health Commons, Farmington, ME, 04398. Donations will aid current and future breast cancer patients in their fight against cancer with comfort care.

Beads on the Kennebec will be closed on Tuesday, October 11th until 2:00 P.M..

Class Updates, New Stuff and Holiday Schedule

Hope you are all enjoying this wonderful summer weather. Here is a quick up date of some super classes from now to the end of the month and some cool new stuff.

Now, if you want to begin your beading journey with the knowledge and skill to create professional looking pieces from the start, then be here this SATURDAY, (August 20, 2011) for BEADING BASICS with Marie Jacques. This class will give you the experience in basic stringing techniques that will propel you into the world of beading with confidence. Start now and there is plenty of time to create fabulous fall fashion pieces, gifts for all the gals on your gift list and maybe sell a few to coworkers and earn a little extra for holiday shopping. Who knows where it could lead you. In class you will string a bracelet or necklace and learn to make basic stacked earrings. There are a few seats available, so call and reserve your seat today. Class starts at 10:30 till 12:30 (approx..).

GET READY FOR FALL FASHIONS, NOW!

The SPARKLING GARDEN BRACELET was so popular when offered in May, that the class filled up almost overnight. If you missed it then or have just discovered this beautiful piece, there are just a couple of seats left in the class next THURSDAY, August 25^th. This is one of those must have pieces. This beautiful design by Joetta Payne first appeared in the June 2003 Bead & Button magazine. This triangular variation of Right-angle weave is not for the beginning bead weaver, but if you have some hand weaving experience, particularly with right-angle weave, you will do just fine. Those of you who have become fans of Japanese Weaving will love the progression of this bracelet. The photo doesn't do justice to the piece. Do stop in and see it in person. If you are a "crow" like me, you'll just have to have one.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 27,2011 12:00-2:30, Sue Daigle will be on hand to instruct you in the ancient art of Japanese Braiding or "Kumihimo". This technique dates back to around 8000 BC, yet fits into our contemporary society quite well. Meaning a "Gathering of Threads", Kumihimo braids were used as personal adornment such as obi-jime ties, ropes to bind ancient scrolls, and were presented by emperors to heroes and others who earned high honors. Today they lend themselves well to belts, trims, handbag straps and, of course, jewelry. This relaxing form of beaded braiding works up quite quickly and makes beautiful, affordable and very unique gifts. This class always fill quickly so reserve your seat early. Ask for a materials list as a small amount of prep work is necessary prior to the class.

Please keep in mind that the shop will be closed for a long LABOR DAY WEEKEND from Friday, September 2nd through Monday, September 5th. Please plan your shopping accordingly.

It's Wire Week!

Hi Everyone,

This is the week of WIRE!

The WIRE AND CRYSTAL CUFF this evening is full. But look for it on the fall schedule if you missed it this time. It’s a fun piece to make, wear or give. With the new silver filled wire available, it’s very affordable to make.

SATURDAY, Mig Lemire is here all day with two exciting wire projects. In the morning from 10:30-12:30 it’s PRONGS. This is the third class in the Basic WIREWORKS Series. Mig will expertly guide you through the process of making a “Pronged” setting for a faceted stone. This is a piece that always gets compliments and people are floored when you say "I made it myself". This can be done with any size or shape of faceted stone but Mig suggests a rectangular stone for your first project. A selection of CZs and Swarovski stones ideal for this project are in stock and quite affordable. NOTE*: This is the last time this class will be offered, this year. SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE.

In the afternoon from 1-3 p.m., learn to fashion these fantastic TEARDROP EARRINGS. You'll want to wear these beautiful earrings everywhere! Mig will show you how to fashion a teardrop, basket weave setting to cradle 12-14mm flat backed cabochons or Swarovski Rivolis. On line or in a jewelry store, these would cost a small fortune, but, you can make them yourself for a fraction of the cost of store bought. They'll make a wonderful extra special gift, too. Skill Level: Intermediate (Pre-requisite: Wire Sculpting or Border Wrap)

Showing Off !!!

We recently had a class for the Victorian Crystal Heirloom Ornament. It is always fun to see the colors and combinations that people come up with to create this beautiful piece. Well the prize for most unusual goes to Annette Barrows of Manchester. Annette has a grandson that love Halloween. It’s his favorite holiday. So, she created one of these ornaments using a black glass ornament, orange seed beads and bone skeleton skulls for the drops. Bravo Annette, for your creativity. There are just so many possibilities with beads. Stop in, browse, and let your creativity soar!

Class runs from 6-8 and the fee is $25.

SATURDAY, JULY 9^TH, Mig is back with us with two super classes. From 10:30 – 12:30, she will walk you through the beautiful BORDER WRAP. This is a great one to learn because the binding technique for the edges lends itself to many other wire wrapping projects. For example, “Prongs” (see description under next month’s wire class listing on the website).

From 1-3p.m., try the exquisite “Beez to Butterflies” Chain Maille technique. You must have some prior chain maille experience for this class. This is a beautiful, substantial bracelet. I just love the feel of the piece on my wrist. It has just enough weight to let you know you are wearing something special. If you are not sure if you have the experience necessary to take on the project? Call me for more information. Fee: $65 for each of Mig’s wire classes.

Deadline to submit designs: Friday, MAY 27^TH 2011, by close of store.

All designs must be submitted with complete entry form. (see website for downloadable form)

Designs must incorporate Maureen Connolly’s “COMMON CENTS” enameled pennies. Designs must be original and must fall into one of the following wearable categories - Necklace, bracelet, brooch or earrings.

Entries must be submitted with complete materials list. 80% of materials must come from BOTK.

Designs may be by a single person or a collaboration.

Judging will take place on Saturday, May 28t h, 2011, after close of business.

Winners will be announced via email on Tuesday, May 31^st, 2011

All entries will be available for pick-up on June 4^th and all items must be picked-up by June 11^th, 2011.

Winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Beads on the Kennebec.

Pearls, Clasps and Strawberries!

The weather doesn’t seem to want to cooperate, so, I guess we’ll have to just keep Spring in our heads and hearts until it decides to arrive. Until it does, stop in and surround yourself with wonderful colors and textures. A new shipment of top drilled pearls have arrived in time for Mig Lemire’s Spring Fever Bracelet next month.

And in anticipation of all the wonderful bracelet classes coming up, there are many new clasps to try. Box clasps, Swarovski hinged clasps, toggle clasps, clasps in beautiful and lasting plates and precious metals to fit any budget.

There is still room in the PEYOTE BOOKMARK class tomorrow, Thursday, April 21^st, from 6-8 p.m.. If you only learn one hand weaving stitch, Peyote stitch is the one to learn. A popular form of hand weaving that produces a brick pattern, Peyote is used to create bracelets, necklaces, encase cabochons, and in the more advanced forms, beaded boxes and sculptures. The feel of the finished piece is like fabric. Thumbing through beading magazines and books you will generally see one or more projects that incorporate peyote stitch. In this class we will create a Flat Even Count Peyote band which may be finished as either a bracelet or bookmark. Once you know how to get them started, Peyote is a very easy and relaxing stitch. The simple bookmark or bracelet make great gifts, too.

If you hunger for a taste of summer, be here this Saturday, April 23^rd for ODIN’S sweet STRAWBERRY EARRINGS. Not to be confused with Japanese Braiding, this is another wonderful technique out of Japan. Odin is our resident expert on JAPANESE WEAVING. She has mastered the art and so many of the published patterns that she has come up with many of her own. Using monofiliment line and Swarovski Crystals you'll learn to create these whimsical strawberries to use as earrings, pendant or just to dangle from your cell phone, purse or keychain. (You have to see them in person to appreciate how really sweet they are). Once you master the technique, there are other patterns in the shop by Odin to entice you to get weaving Japanese style. This is a popular class so, reserve early.

Next week, WIRE CROCHET is back by popular demand. Crocheting with wire is far simpler than it looks and the results are spectacular. This necklace always gets oohs and aahs. Simple to create and stunning no matter what type of bead you select. Use seed beads, gemstone chips, round, square, large, small or a combination of all of the above to create a truly unique look. The same technique delivers completely different results depending on your choice of beads, and colors. It's such fun to combine beads for incredible results. Skill Level: Beginner to Beading, (please have basic knowledge of crochet slip stitch). Call to reserve your seat Thursday, April 28^th. Class starts at 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

If you loved the Wire Sculpting class with Mig, you'll love Border Wrap. The second in Mig's WIREWORKS SERIES, this class teaches you how to showcase a cabochon or other flat backed stone by incasing the edges in a bound wire wrap. You'll learn to create exquisite slides and pendants. The techniques learned here will give you the confidence to turn out professional quality rings, bracelets, earrings and more. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then this one speaks volumes. If you are not familiar with Eni Oken's work, she is nationally known for her whimsical and ornamental award winning designs. With Eni's permission, Mig will show you the fine art of creating intricate "looking" designs such as this one. As with many beading techniques, this is not as difficult as it look especially when you have Mig to help you navigate through the process. Don't wait to reserve your seat, Mig's classes fill quickly. Skill Level: Novice (some wire working recommended)

And just as a reminder:
Many of you may remember the Cinderella Project that we participated in last spring. Briefly, it is a project sponsored by the Waldo Community Action Partners (WCAP), where prom dresses and accessories are collected by the community and offered free of charge to high school girls to make their prom experience special. You know how costly preparing for prom night can be and many young women would not be able to participate in this very special coming of age event without help. The event will take place next Saturday, April 9th at the Reny’s Plaza in Belfast.

Beads on the Kennebec will be a drop off spot for the Central Maine area again this year and donations may be dropped off at the shop any time Tues-Fri 10 – 5:00 and this Saturday from 10 – 2:30. The deadline for drop offs here at the shop will be Thursday, April 7th, at 4:00 P.M.. Items that are needed are gowns, dresses, shoes, jewelry, wraps, and new make-up items.

Upcoming Classes and Some New Beads

We have some great classes coming up this week and next and there are still a few seats left.

DIAGONAL RIGHT-ANGLE WEAVE or (RAW on the side) as I like to call it. THURSDAY, MARCH 17TH, 6-8 P.M.. Right-angle weave is a favorite stitch of beaders everywhere. You will see it often in beading books and magazines and done in a variety of ways. This piece designed by Beth Stone and first published in the August 2006 Bead and Button, turns right-angle weave on its side to produce a soft and flexible necklace. Done in seed beads you can embellish it can be embellished with pearls or crystals. You will also learn to create a beaded toggle to keep it secure. This is a pretty piece with an interesting “slant” on a popular stitch. SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE (prior work in right angle weave helpful).

DAISY CHAIN RESCHEDULED TO THURSDAY, MARCH 24^TH. If you wanted to take the DAISY CHAIN class that was offered last Thursday and were unable to register in time, you can still take it next Thursday, March 24^th 6:00-8:00PM. The class was rescheduled due to uncertain weather, so give a call and reserve your seat. The daisy is such a simple, sweet flower. And that is just the way I’d describe this variation on a daisy chain. Vines and flowers are both size 11 seed beads although, you could use any size or colors to change the look and make it truly your own. This is a very easy project for first time hand weavers. But, even the more experienced can have a lot of fun with it. So, if you’ve wanted to try your hand at working with seed beads, or just want a simple little pattern to stitch, you’ll have fun with this one. This is a piece the all women, from granddaughters to grandmothers, will love to own. SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

Show and Tell:

Take a look at what Barry MacMillan has created with her new found knowledge of VIKING KNIT. Barry took the class and learned how to do this ancient technique using the newfangled Viking Knit tool. She found that the size of the knitted tube was just perfect for the large hole “Pandora Style” beads. Another great idea for displaying your favorite big hole beads. Nice work Barry!

The pretty fancy “Basic” pieces (pictured below) were created by the mother/daughter team of Linda and Emily Novak.

Daisy Chains and Summer Stones

Ok Folks, despite the white stuff still hanging around outside, Daylight Savings Time begins next Sunday night, and the first day of SPRING is just 11 days away! So hang in there, it’s coming! In the meantime, create your own spring this Thursday evening, March 10, from 6-8 PM with the DAISY CHAIN necklace. This sweet little chain is easy enough for beginners and it’s a fun project for the more experienced hand weaver. Do it up in size 11 seed beads for a very delicate look or 8s for a more stand out piece. Either way, this is a chain that ladies from 8 to 80 years young will love. The Cinderella Project 2011

I'd like to take a moment of your time to talk about a pet project of mine.

Many of you may remember the Cinderella Project that we participated in last spring. Briefly, it is a project sponsored by the Waldo Community Action Partners (WCAP), where prom dresses and accessories are collected by the community and offered free of charge to high school girls to make their prom experience special. You know how costly preparing for prom night can be and many young women would not be able to participate in this very special coming of age event without help.

Last year Beads on the Kennebec was a drop-off spot for donations in the Central Maine area and will be again this year. (More on donation specifics and drop-off dates later)

Cinderella Project is on the ballot for Bangor Savings Bank’s Community Matters More Campaign and are in the running for a $5000 grant if they receive enough votes. If you have the time and inclination, I am asking you to take a moment and click on this link and cast your vote HERE. Beaders Night Out - Rescheduled!

Due to the double storm forecast for today and tomorrow, I’d rather play it safe than sorry. The Beader’s Night Scheduled for this evening, Tuesday, February 1st, will be rescheduled to this Thursday, February 3rd. Although the snow prediction for today is light (2-4 inches), the snowfall prediction is from midday through 8-9:00 this evening. The prediction for tomorrow is for a wild, snowy day with snowfalls around 12” here in Central Maine. If that’s the case, I may close early or not open at all. So, call before coming in on Wednesday, or better yet, get what you need today so you can have all of your supplies handy to stay in and bead tomorrow. The storm will cleared out early Thursday according to the meteorologists , so we should be in good shape to meet on Thursday evening. Those of you who have signed up for tonight, please drop a quick line back to me if you can to confirm that you have received this information.

If you are a “Wise Woman” who has been planning on stopping in tomorrow for your card and to take advantage of the discount, I will honor the discount today or Thursday for this week only.

Speaking of the “Wise Woman” arrangement that is starting here at the shop, a customer approached me with a terrific idea. She told me that when she first saw “Wise Women Wednesdays” she thought it was going to be a beading group that got together on Wednesday. Well, why not? It doesn’t have to be just for people 65 and over, it’s for anyone who has the availability to come in during the daytime. No fee, no set hours just come on in, meet and make friends with other beaders and let it evolve naturally. Over time, it could develop into a beading guild of sorts, or just a friendly afternoon of beading shared by likeminded people in a pleasant atmosphere with lovely music and a great view. Let me know what you think or just come on in next Wednesday and stay a while.

We all had a great deal of fun with Odin on Saturday learning the art of Japanese Weaving with the Gradient Pendant. This Saturday, February 5th, Odin is back for more fun with crystals. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the lovely Crystal Heart Bracelet is so easy to learn and fun to make. You’ll be making up dozens of these sweet little hearts to fashion into bracelets, earrings or whatever you can conjure up. String them, connect them with wire, dangle from a chain for a free floating pendant or handbag embellishment. Give one to all of your sweethearts!

Crimpers and Knotter and Knitters....Oh Joy!!!

SANTA paid a visit to the shop over the weekend and brought some brand new toys for all your beading joys. Check out these hot, new tools that are designed to make your beading experience easier and therefore even more FUN!!

First up is the newest innovation in crimping. The 1 STEP CRIMPER. Just position your crimp tube, squeeze once and you have a perfectly formed and tightly fastened crimp. No more squeezing, turning, squeezing and slipping off the crimp and making several passes before you get it right! One squeeze and you are done!

Next up, the brand new EASYKNOTTER!, And this is the easiest knotter, this beader has ever seen! I’ve been asked on more than one occasion to teach a class on KNOTTING. I admit, I’ve been putting it off because, well, everyone has their forte and knotting has never been one of mine. Some people can make perfect, consistent knots every time. I may go along fine for a few and then one isn’t snug enough or is too tight and slips inside the bead. Wanting perfection, I usually start all over again until I get it right. What a waste of cord (and time). Well, wait until you try the newest and easiest knotter to come along. Even I have fun knotting now! Just make a very loose knot, pass your end beads through the loop, place the loose knot on the pin in the center of the board and slide the knot to the previous bead. You can knot one bead after the other as with pearls or, use the hand measures on the board to space your knotted beads out along the piece. Sooooooooooooooo easy and actually fun to do. Check it out. you’ll never go back to other methods.

Last but certainly not least is the LAZEE DAIZE VIKING KNITTER. If you love doing Viking Knit or would like to try it but think it’s complicated and time consuming, you must try this new Viking Knitter. No more taping a starter piece to a dowel and struggling to get the end of the wire under the next loop. This knitter gets you started in a snap, expands as the chain does and finishing is a breeze!

All three of these innovative tools are in house for you to try. All will make your beading experience even more enjoyable! And, let’s face it, that’s why we bead. To enjoy the creative experience.

For the past several years I’ve put together a Basket Full of Beads and Beading supplies worth over $250 and you were able to earn chances toward winning it. Everyone had fun earning chances and dreaming of winning that big, beautiful basket. There was just one problem. There was only one winner. The weather may have been damp the past couple of days, but the foliage is still breathtaking! And lasting far longer than usual. The next time you are in the shop, take a look out the classroom window (but do it soon). The trees along the river and around the band stand are amazing! Bring a coffee (or I’ll make you a cup of tea) and relax and take in the beauty for a while. The rush of preparing for the holidays will soon be upon us. So, take a few moments to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. One of my favorite sayings came to mind as I was taking in the view yesterday. I should make it my mantra and say it every day to remind me of what is really important. You’ve probably heard it, but it’s worth repeating. It goes, “Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.” Enjoy this beautiful season while we have it. It will give you stamina for the rush ahead.

Keith O'Connor Trunk Show October 9th - and NEW BEADS!!!

REMEMBER: KEITH O’CONNOR will be here this Saturday, October 9^th starting at 10:30, with trays and trays of beautiful and unique Raku (an ancient Japanese technique), Porcelain and Pottery Beads. Each bead is lovingly shaped, fired and glazed by hand. Keith will be happy to chat with you about the process and his wife Laurie is a font of ideas on how to use the beads. She will be glad to demonstrate techniques for stringing and finishing jewelry pieces using these wonderful works of art. Don’t miss out on fun, food and fabulous handmade beads and a chat with the artist himself. Pictured below are samples of Keith’s work.

New Items in Stock!!!!

The arrival of Fall makes me want to reorganize..........my space, my time, my beading projects. I sort through my bead tray(s), find the UFOs (unfinished objects), separate them into baggies and number them according to how involved they are to finish or fix. “Easy” being, this item needs a clasp or a jump ring. “Involved” meaning, this needs to be completely reworked or started over. Then when I have a little time I finish up one or two of the UFOs before I begin an exciting new project. BEADER’S NIGHT OUT is an excellent time to tackle those UFOs. The first Tuesday of each month (next Tuesday, October 5th for this month), is when we meet. There is NO FEE for the time. Just come on in and bring whatever project you are working on. If you need a certain finding, you have the shop stock right here to find what you are looking for. Plus, it’s a great way to meet and commune with other beaders, see what they are working on and maybe share or pick up a new trick. Call and let me know you will be coming as seating is limited.

TRUNK SHOW: Pottery artist KEITH O’CONNOR will be here next Saturday, October 9th, with a trunk full of his amazing RAKU, PORCELAIN and POTTERY BEADS. Keith’s beads have been featured in national beading magazines, including the popular “STRINGING” magazine. You will be able to see what’s new and shop his wonderful selection at a special “show price” for that day. This will be our THIRD ANNUAL Show with Keith and his wife Laurie who will be on hand to demonstrate some techniques for stringing the beads and creating closures from waxed linen and other materials. There will be munchies to pick on, great conversation, new tricks to learn, and of course, beautiful beads! Don’t miss it!

Trunk Show Saturday August 14!!!!

On this Saturday, August 14th, world renown Maine wire artist, Mig Lemire, will be presenting her first ever Trunk Show here at Beads on the Kennebec. Many of you who have taken her classes here at the shop are already familiar with her work and know what a talented artist and teacher she is. Now is your chance to see the full scope of her work up close and personal. And for those of you who have admired the photos of her class projects, but haven’t yet mustered the courage (or found the time) to attempt one of her classes, this is your chance to purchase one of her unique wire wrapped creations. She’ll have a full sampling of her work with an emphasis on beach glass harvested here on the coast of Maine. The show will run from 10:30 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. This is just a sampling of some of Mig’s creations in beach glass and vintage Swarovski:

The other event going on this Saturday, takes place down the street at Stacy’s Hallmark Store. Stacy’s is one of only16 Hallmark Gold Crown stores in the country to have been awarded a prestigious Signing Event this year. For those of you who are collectors of Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, the name Tammy Haddix may be familiar to you. Ms. Haddix is one of the most beloved members of the Hallmark Ornament community and she will be signing ornaments at Stacy’s this Saturday, August 14th. This event is expected to draw a large number of Hallmark Ornament fans from all over the country. The Cinderella Project

Perhaps you've heard about it already, but, I've just become aware of "The Cinderella Project". It's a wonderful program where formal dresses and accessories are collected and made available to young women across the state to make their prom night, "a night to remember".
Prom time can be a wonderful experience for teens, but, it can also be wrought with feeling of inadequacy and self-doubt. Prom attire can be costly and many families, feeling the economic pinch of these times, can barely afford necessities let alone formal attire for one night.

The Cinderella Project allows us to be "Fairy Godmothers" to teens who may not be able to afford the transforming feeling of belonging as an equal, on one very special night of their young lives.

This is the 4th year of the project here in Maine. Gowns and other attire will be given away to any young lady from the State of Maine with the one stipulation that the girl must do a good deed for someone else.

This year's event will be held from 10am-6pm at Reny's Plaza in Belfast, Maine on Saturday, April 10th, 2010. It is first come, first served.

Sought after items include: "Gently" used Gowns or Dresses, Accessories, Jewelry (of course), Shoes, and unopened Make-up.

Many of you have commented to me that you love beading so much that you have a surplus of finished jewelry and don't know what to do with it all. Well, here's a chance to put it to good use and make a young lady feel like a fairy princess for one night. (And you'll feel so good that your own glow will outshine the bling that you bring).

I have volunteered to be the drop spot for the Central Maine area. Items need to be dropped off here at the shop, no later than 5:00 pm on Thursday, April 8th. If you wish to make the trip to Belfast yourself, donations will even be taken at the door on the day of the event. Non-fat Donuts - and New Items in Stock

The skies have been brilliant blue the past couple of days. Enjoy it while you can, this weekend will not be quite as nice. What ever the weather outside, you can create your own Dazzling Day by coming in and creating some beautiful bling with Mig Lemire. Our own wire guru is back this Saturday, March 13th, with two amazing classes. Starting at 10:30 in the morning, you will learn Border Wrapping on flat backed stones. This is a technique you'll use over and over again. This is one of the Basic Wire classes so even if you've never worked with wire before, you'll come away with an amazing piece and a new skill to add to your repertoire.

Over the past several months I've had a number of people comment on "Donut Beads". They have been featured in a number of beading magazines lately. The unusual round flat gemstone beads with a hole in the center are intriguing, but not many people have a clear vision of what to do with them. I've been asked to have a class to show what you can do with these beautiful gems. Here again, Mig is truly amazing. Ask her to create a design for "Donut" beads and you'll get not one, but three amazing designs. "Gemstone Donuts" will be held Saturday, March 13th at 1:00 P.M.. Bring Donuts you already have or choose from the selection here in shop. Either way, learn what beauty you can create with donuts. Don'(u)t delay! This is certainly the week for wire. The newest Step by Step Wire magazine just came in and is chock full of lovely new designs. And, Don't miss the special edition of Wirework. This is a one time publication and won't be out for long. Get it while it lasts.

With spring approaching, crosses are in demand whether you're making a rosary, or a necklace for Easter, First Communion, Confirmation or Wedding. There is a new selection of crosses and rosary center in stock in both sterling silver, pewter and plate and more coming in. Check back frequently.

When you think of spring your thoughts also turn to brides. If there is a wedding in your spring or summer plans, there are new charms in house to enhance the bridal party's jewelry.
